Curriculum Overview...

We believe that adopting positive attitudes to learning right from the start is essential for children to become lifelong learners. Fundamental to this is not only the knowledge and skills taught but also the way in which the curriculum is delivered. Research has shown that play is a major contributor to intellectual growth and that children need plenty of opportunities to consolidate their learning and understanding through planned play opportunities and experimentation

Our school values are used to support the statutory curriculum we deliver:

'Branch Out and Blossom' 'Deep Roots Help Trees Stand Strong'
Challenge and Pride Independence
We feel it is really important for our children to be clear about their achievements and know how to challenge themselves. We ensure that learning intentions and opportunities for challenge are transparent and accessible for all children. Our children are taught to recognise when they have challenged themselves and to be proud of their achievements.  We promote independence right from the start. We feel it is important for children to have the confidence to think independently and 'have a go' as this is often when learning opportunities are the richest. We also ensure that children have an opportunity during the school day to independently practise skills taught during teacher directed time to embed understanding and fuel enthusaistic learners.
'Weather all Weathers' 'Seek Shade and Reflect'
Resilience Reflection
We want our children to have ambition, drive and commitment so that they develop perseverance. We believe that resilience is a lifelong skill that will support our children to become creative problem solvers who are curious, willing to try new things and make the most of opportunities and challenges. Our curriculum is designed to promote and manage risk taking. Our aim is to develop reflective thinkers as we believe that children make progress more effectively if they have an understanding and ownership of their learning. Knowing how far you have travelled and what lies in front of you is vitally important when considering the next steps that you need to take! We involve children in each part of this journey so that they understand the reasons why they are learning particular things, can reflect on how well they have learned something and are able to discuss their next steps.

Foundation Subjects...

We teach our curriculum through topics which provide lots of opportunities for cross curricular links and linking learning. The topics we teach may change according to the children's interests, historical events or to revitalise learning. For this reason we have developed skills progressions for the foundation subjects which ensure coverage and age related expectations for each year group.
